Golfweek Computer Rankings

The coaches across the country and the computers continue to recognize the success of the Illinois golf team this fall. Two of the three major polls have the Illini at no. 6 while the other has them seventh nationally in the final rankings of the fall season.

Illinois is sixth in the Golf World/Nike coaches' poll. Georgia, who won the final tournament of the fall at Isleworth, received 23 of the 24 first-place votes and is ranked first followed by Oklahoma State, Alabama, USC, Stanford and Illinois. Clemson, Indiana, Arizona State and Arkansas round out the top 10. USC received the other first-place vote.

The Golfstat computer rankings, which had Illinois no. 1 for three straight weeks, lists the Illini sixth after the fall season behind Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma State, USC and Clemson. The Golfweek computer ranks Illinois seventh behind Georgia, USC, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Stanford and Clemson. Illinois sophomore Scott Langley is ranked 15th individually by Golfweek.

Illinois won three of the five fall tournaments while finishing second in another. The Illini did so against stiff competition, posting 12 head-to-head victories over eight different ranked opponents on the season. Illinois posted its biggest in-season tournament title in some time with a win at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. Illinois defeated seven ranked teams, including three of the top five teams nationally in that event. The Illini won three tournaments in a row for the first time in 20 years, also bettering the field at both the Windon Memorial and the D.A. Weibring Invitational.

The Illini begin the spring season Feb. 13-14 at the Big Ten Match Play event in Coral Springs, Fla.
